전시작가권선영, 이상수, 전병삼 ―The Projective ViewSeojeong Art Busan is pleased to announce ‘The Projective View’, a 3-person exhibition of Kwon Sun Young, Lee Sang Soo, and Jeon Byeong Sam covering various artistic vocabularies from collage to digital painting, photography, and sculpture. This exhibition examines the perspectives and interpretations of artists looking at the lives of modern people. As if focusing on a camera, they trace and observe the fragments of life with their eyes and record the traces.Kwon Sun Young creates a flower garden by reducing the images she encounters in her daily life and collaging them into digital prints. Through her artistic perspective, everyday objects such as flyers, books, bottles, watches, and hand creams transform with new meanings and various colors. The artist's splendid and alluring garden also suggests a different side of everyday objects in that her garden consists of scrap pieces and discarded objects that have lost their original function. As the accidental collage of fragmentary images of objects forms an invisible relationship, Kwon's work draws the viewer's attention to the continuum of life.Lee Sang Soo presents a series of animal sculptures composed of minimal 'lines'. To create a visually dynamic sculpture, Lee draws out the animal's structural characteristics around the animal's main skeleton, adds a sleek silhouette to depict movement, and leaves the rest of the omitted physical features to the viewer's imagination. He brings steel animal structures to life by creating drawings using 3D programs and then processing them utilizing various output methods to give them physicality. In addition, Lee's sculptures capture the actions and movements unique to each animal. Inspired by Picasso's drawings that reproduce shapes with simple drawing lines, Lee Sang Soo projects his imagination to fill the invisible.Jeon Byeong Sam and his photographs also allow us to look into the essence of objects in the way of obliteration rather than representation. There are various ways to reproduce objects, such as maximizing small parts that cannot be easily captured with the naked eye or creating an optical illusion through omission. Jeon goes further by paying attention to the properties of phenomena through the methods of 'folding' and 'unfolding'. The Moment series introduced in this exhibition is made by layering layers of image fragments that exude from the sides of a printed photograph when folded in half. What is seen in this work may be simply a series of 'lines', but the thousands of identical photos and countless stories contained within them simultaneously raise the question of presence and absence of meaning. The artist creates this paradox by choosing photography as a medium and actively annihilating its original function, reinforcing the artistic message that “disappearing is not the end, but a new beginning”.'Projective View' implies a story about all aspects of the world we see through overlapping and omission of images. This exhibition is a journey of confronting the invisible–where they were and what they saw–in the works of Kwon Sun Young, Lee Sang Soo, and Jeon Byeong Sam, and fills that void with your active imagination.

Jungwon Phee expresses the hybrid of his experiences and emotions derived from those experiences by abstracting them in black on the canvas. Phee places his memories from his deep self in the cracks and curves of densely piled-up, black matière. Phee's first solo exhibition with Seojung Art examines the past and the present of his Untitled series, covering from its bedrock (After Image, 2017~) to the latest developments (Untitled: Black Path). The rough and black space inside Jungwon Phee’s paintings is inspired by the cave. The cave is linked to personal memories of Phee's early days as a hideout while studying in Canada and the United States; it is also where he encountered the murals that later became his visual motif. Cave murals cannot exist without the accumulation of changes in time and space, and this mechanism has become a crucial element for the artist to visualize the accumulated experiences and emotions. Just as the huge cave paintings evince a vast passage of time, refined versions of the emotions and memories of Phee's experiences get transferred to the canvas like a chronicle. The vast plain of Phee's painting is composed of layers of energetic brushstrokes and darkness; the image appears when the synthesis–confluence–of intense cracks in his thick and atypical matière occur. The influence of memories Jungwon Phee has accumulated while studying abroad is evident in the After Image(2017~) series. In After Image, Phee illustrates his childhood memories in a foreign country on a background painted with a mixture of black gesso, a material of western origin, and ink that symbolizes his national identity and nostalgia for his home country. What you see in the abstract realm of Phee's canvas is not a single expressive mass but individually transfigured images. This series is also in line with Untitled: Black Path which transforms his memories after 2020 into a single lump. Here, the rich cracks created by the mixture of cement and Galkyd fill the black background, maximizing the visual experience of his painting. In ‘CONFLUENCE’, Phee showcases a large-scale series from Untitled: Black Path, the result of his research into ‘imaginable’ abstract experiences that go beyond the act of seeing and reach a point of empathy for emotions and memories. Inspired by the caves, the source of his early inspiration, the space where the presentation of this series takes place is dim. This captivating ambiance invites the viewers to take a closer look at every aspect of his work, which ultimately prepares them for a journey toward complete abstraction. Phee also exhibits an archive of his doodles, drawings, and sketches that traces the process and birth of his abstraction-in-black. Phee translates his visual experience into abstraction on the canvas. As the created images unify, they become a force of expression. Finally, the abstraction reinterpreted in the formal language of Phee sparks a moment of confluence as it synthesizes with the audience's experience. And through this confluence, his work ultimately becomes a medium between the artist and the audience.

전시의 제목 은 “It’s like some gorgeous dream!” 전시작가사이먼 고 ―Some Gorgeous DreamNot confined to any square canvas, Nanan Kang’s work communicates with the public in the form of a picture on a window or a bunch of paper flowers brimming with vitality. ―One of the defining paradoxes of today lies in feeling disconnected from the densely populated city around us in the era of unprecedented connectivity. Kwankyemang: Connectworking directs our attention to the interpersonal relationships in today’s society.   As the title of the show implies, the show seeks to explore how the interactions among the ideas of community, connectivity and communication are reflected in the diverse ways we relate to each other on both individual and collective levels.   As we navigate our way out of the time of social-distancing and contact-tracing, we invite the works of eight artists to come together, interact and connect. Kwankyemang: Connectworking   proposes a renewed meaning of connectivity and connection.  On view will be the works of the following eight artists.Simon Ko portrays human relationships in their private and universal aspects. Based loosely on his personal experience, Ko’s paintings present the trust, hope, and despair inherent to interpersonal connections through his gentle and calm poeticism.Jung Hanuk’s intermixing of disparate elements on his canvases pushes the boundaries of painting. Jung has created works that capture the afterimages of memories shared to him by immigrant children whom he has interviewed during his time in Germany. Reclaimed by the children as they grow into their own, their memory fragments are transformed by Jung into unexpected and compelling images that comprise Jung’s works.Seungyoon Choi’s paintings are a reflection of his deep thoughts about the concepts of paradox and duality. Choi views his works as living beings or microcosms in which the cosmic rules of opposites are painted in blue. To Choi, the color blue possesses an ontological meaning, which he mixes with others to create dynamic and powerful abstractions.Qwaya captures moments of everyday life and retells them in his distinctly poignant point of view. By preserving the fleeting moments of just-another-day on the canvas, he says he “momentarily stops the passage of time.” Instantly relatable and beautifully poetic, Qwaya’s works garner admiration from people from all walks of life.PHEE Jungwon creates paintings that explore the depths of his self-awareness using ink and gesso, the primal materials of Eastern and Western painting traditions. Inspired by personal experiences and emotions, PHEE’s paintings are testament to his dedicated research and experiments on materials, which flow and crack on the paintings’ surfaces.HONG Seong Joon’s works are like a love letter to painting in which he reinterprets and processes his photographic images in painting’s terms and probes fundamental questions regarding the topic of materiality in painting. HONG explores the relationship between seeing and being seen, and shows his findings through various tools and frameworks.Hwang Do you examines the relationship between painterliness and the human hand’s imperfections. Applying the Eastern concept of “the holistic brushstroke” to the Western painting tradition, Hwang fills her canvas with carefully placed brushstrokes that do not overlap one another. Through the use of her signature technique and the girl-figure “Alice,” Hwang creates landscapes of painterly purity and otherworldliness.Hwang Wonhae creates abstract paintings using fragmented images of the city and architectural structures. Through her works that rearrange and combine fragments of the urban landscape and various architectural elements, Hwang investigates the boundaries between the two- and three-dimensions, and explores new depths of painting. The special exhibit Kwankyemang: Connectworking on view at Seojung Art Gangnam presents the works of contemporary artists, and shares their artistic inquiries, their findings as well as the future they are headed to. By bringing together influential artists with active roles in today’s rapidly-changing art world, we hope to generate exciting discussions around these artists and provide the audience with the opportunity to discover new possibilities in them.

전시작가박현지, 전아현―Healing ForestTo contemporary humans, a forest is a space that can be used to rest and recharge. People tend to replenish their energy by going up a mountain, walking through the park, or going on an outing on their day off. But, there is the city as a space contrasting with the forest. People work, enter into some relation, and evolve in the city, but relieve their stress brought on by their urban life in nature, especially the forest. A key concept in Hyunji Park’s work is ‘memory.’ The motivation of her life is her childhood memories of her time spent in nature. Nature was a great comfort to her as a child. She was often lonely but was comforted by nature. She represents the warmth and relaxation she felt at that time on the wall using a tufting technique. Trees, grasses, and a spring illustrated by weaving thread have a feel different from those in nature, but they are newly created by her hands to have a soft touch like a blanket her mother placed over her as a child. Ahyun Jeon tries to represent what she feels in nature in a variety of forms including objects. The DEPTH OF MISTY MOUNTAIN(深山) series is a representation of serenity and repose we can feel in the mountains, capturing the moments she gained comfort from in the mountains shrouded with cloud and mist. She concretely illustrates the outlines of mountains reminiscent of landscape painting, thereby enabling her pieces to be actually used and experienced rather than just seen. Applying deep-distance perspective, an ink wash landscape painting technique, in which one may feel like they are looking down the mountains from the sky, she created works that make the viewer’s eyes look down. Jeon hopes her scenes of mist streaming between the mountains offer consolation to the viewers. This exhibition is designed to provide viewers with comfort and relaxation through works by the two artists who have worked on the themes of forest and nature. The nature they portrayed is not in imitation of real nature. They capture and depict impressions they have from forests using different materials. All the same, they commonly seek solace and peace in forests and intend to be healed by them. A natural place today has particular significance to urbanites. It is our hope that this art show will serve as a chance to relieve stress through works by the two artists who seek solaced in nature.ArtistHyunji Park, Ahyun Jeon 일자 2022. 07. 11.

Seojung Art is pleased to announce Passage: Artificial Paradise featuring works by Jeong Daun and Choi Eunjeong from June 20 to July 17, 2022. Jeong Daun utilizes materials that are used in daily life to express spontaneous feelings through “Fabric Drawing” instead of reproducing and embodying subjects. Meanwhile, Choi Eunjeong’s works draw out limitless imagination from a flat surface to draw viewers into a fictitious world. These two artists present such an amusing space, designing time and space. All subjects and materials found in their works feel both new and familiar, and also unfamiliar yet not completely foreign. The Third Space is made up of finely designed signs that do not rely on what has been seen, remembered, or felt before and acts as a passage between what we “see” and what we “imagine.” Jeon Daun draws “Fabric Drawing,” changing a material’s characteristics to draw with fabric rather than with paint. Fabric is arranged as if mixing paint, and other materials such as leather or lace are used depending on the circumstances and the feelings being expressed. Fabric pieces made by the artist are shaped differently, spread, and stretched to cover the sturdy canvas. The emotions felt by the individual in that one space and time are remembered along with the dynamic movements of the fabric. The artist covers these pieces in a thin cloth as if to hide them, and brings to mind the music that the artist was listening to while working on them to present another melody. All of the possibilities that can be realized with the characteristics of the fabric are expanded upon, requiring a certain perspective and sensation to experience the exhibition. The fabric pieces that make up the exhibition space are overlapped to create gaps that attract attention and make viewers imagine how they would feel to the touch. The exhibition makes viewers think about how the materials were originally used and how they fit into the exhibition. The materials are naturally more than just tools or methods for a certain purpose, and become the subject for a story to be told. The artist’s experimental attitude in searching for new materials and studying their characteristics reflects the artist’s intention to create communication between objects and their artworks. Choi Eunjeong’s works are filled with elaborate symbols as if to create a digital space allowing the viewer to imagine a fantasy world. The artist creates a virtual world and ties together scenes inside the world to form memories, making a space inside a space over and over again. Materiality of three-dimensional paint sometimes creates an optical illusion that requires to be viewed as a completely different dimension before being recognized as a two-dimensional canvas. The cheerful painting depicted like a paradise makes the viewer think of a perfect space instead of giving distance from the unfamiliar. The unfamiliar composition, illogical space, and geometric links that can’t be seen in real life all represent a “hetero-ecotopia.” This term is combined the concept of “heterotopia,” first elaborated by Michel Foucault, “different space” from the everyday space, with ecological utopia. “Hetero-ecotopia” is the most accurate word to represent Choi’s work. Historically, ways to create a utopia in an artwork have undergone both small and great changes, and have been presented in complex manners. Classic motifs such as an unknown background, marble temple, a woman lying on a leopard skin stripped of its wildness, and other methods were consistently used. But Choi created remarkably different sceneries by twisting the world we already knew, filling with formative elements, combining and breaking them repeatedly, just like adding dreams within dreams. The images, closer to digital art than to traditional paintings, are results of the artist’s accumulated strokes and labor-intensive actions. This utopia that could only be conceived by surreal imagination shows that it can be recompiled into structural and firm memories through the artist’s hands. The “passage” specified in this exhibition is a concept first created in the early 20th century in Paris by Walter Benjamin (1892-1940) that suggests a visual utopia with a “new city landscape” and “new spectacles.” At that time, visual elements decorated the streets of Paris were increased, creating an unfamiliar effect where daily life gradually drifted into a different kind of splendor and beauty. The past does not remain as a fixed truth, and is made fluid by being endlessly reedited through the possibility of expression and memories. Jeong Daun’s fabric and Choi Eunjeong’s imaginary space both share a piece of the “passage.” The planes, installation, and blend of stacked and added visual materials are anticipated to serve as a bridge between the viewer and a new imaginary space. Artist Jeong Daun, Choi Eunjeong  일자 2022. 06. 20.

Seojung Art is pleased to announce the retrospective exhibition of Kim Whanki, Kim Whanki: Poetry and Song from May 11 until June 17. The exhibition not only portrays the artistic world of Kim Whanki, who often expressed art using Korean objects as materials, but also highlights his artistic history from the 1950s through his later years. Kim Whanki frequently used shapes of objects that embody unique Korean sentiments such as pots, plum blossoms, and cultural assets, also Kim embodied forms of nature reminiscent of mountains, the moon, and the sea. His works such as Garden (1957) and Untitled (1958), which he created while feeling homesick during his studies in Paris (1956-1959), show shadows of semi-figuration through a combination of concise lines, forms, and expressions.Furthermore, Mountain and Moon (1964) and 24-VI-69 #80 (1969), which he created during his New York Years (1963-1974), began to take on the unique lyrical colors that Kim would be known for. This allowed a new appreciation of his exploration of materials and techniques and his immersion as an artist. In particular, the thick textures seen in his early works were gradually replaced by thinner layers of paint.Aside from this, many of his undated sketches reveal fragments of Kim’s lifelong process of research and experimentation. To be exhibited in a single space, Kim Whanki: Poetry and Song features some of the artist’s best-known works along with his more obscure drawings. This way, the exhibition serves to show how his unique artistic style has evolved over time.Kim Whanki (1913-1974), one of the pioneers of Korean abstract art, graduated from Japan's Nihon University in 1936 with a bachelor's degree in fine arts, and held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo to launch his illustrious artistic career. He carried on with his studies in Paris and New York and expanded the scope of his work into the fields of figurative art, semi-figurative art, and abstract art. He mostly followed Western modernism in his works but also tried to portray them in a unique Korean manner. This exhibition focuses on Kim as a researcher who endlessly studied the use of materials and paints, and his experimentations where he figuratively expressed dots, lines, and planes. His diverse painting methods give viewers, who love art, a means to forge a bond of sympathy that transcends time and space, enabling them to appreciate Korea’s unique colors and emotions.

The expressive range of paintings of the present day has expanded tremendously. In the past, they mostly stayed within a simple scope of landscapes, figures, and still life. Now, though, the range of expression in paintings has expanded to include the figurative and the abstract. Paintings are demonstrating boundless possibilities, from works that exist as images to those that include content of abstract or complex nature. Through the works of Lee Hyun Ho and Chun Chang Hwan, this exhibition endeavors to provide an opportunity to reflect upon the expanding roles and possibilities of today’s paintings.Lee Hyun Ho aptly displays common spaces that are easily overlooked in our daily lives. In his works you are likely to see a park’s flowerbed, the scenery outside a window, and bushes growing on a riverbank. In addition, the artist totally transfers his point of view towards a particular scene onto his work. For him, the act of viewing the scenery and tenaciously expressing it is an important way of describing the subject. It appears that he wants to talk about our perspectives toward these subjects rather than the diverse formats or techniques for expressing them.Chun Chang Hwan also presents objects around us that are often neglected. His works capture sceneries such as the view from under the Hangang Bridge and the ventilation shaft on an apartment rooftop. These subjects may seem rather dull as they are common scenes that can be seen in any neighborhood. But the artist expresses complex emotions that he experienced while looking at these spaces, which come as feelings of emptiness at times and of comfort at other times, through the physical properties of his paints and brush strokes. Chun’s works are combinations of different emotions, and it is difficult to describe them with merely a few words. Since his works are difficult to describe linguistically, perhaps it is best to understand them directly through the impressions provided by the images. The similarity of the two artists' works is found in the daily sceneries. However, depending on the expressive methods and the point of view towards the subject, such sceneries can become “imposing sceneries” that contain different emotions and thoughts. It is expected that this exhibition will provide an opportunity to discover the differences in each work, the role of paintings in between, and the messages that the artists wish to convey.

Lee Choun Hwan: Rooted Island, Saatchi Gallery
Seojung Art is pleased to present Lee Choun Hwan’s solo exhibition Rooted Island. This exhibition illuminates the endless explorations of the energy of nature, the land of Korea where Lee himself settled. The exhibition title Lee Choun Hwan: Rooted Island refers to an island deeply embedded in the artist’s work. Here, 'island' refers to the artist's hometown, the 'island' of Wando, and simultaneously the Korean 'island', where the artist has taken root, a geographically peninsula with blocked connections to the continent.Lee Choun Hwan (b.1956), who was born in a small Korean island, Wando, grew up with beautiful landscape. Lee started painting spontaneously after learning calligraphy in ink from his grandfather. The artist’s affection for his hometown led to the respect of the nature and Korea. This exhibition presents works by Lee, who had devoted himself to ink painting for more than 20 years, created with an application of the Western painting style for the first time. The transition of using materials showed in the early 2000s was connected to the change of his expression method. Unlike ink paintings which depicted real scenery, colour field surface, dot, and line appeared in Lee’s works. This was also the reflection of the change of Lee's interest from visible things to more fundamental natural elements and the energy they made. Lee climbed famous mountains in Korea numerous times, producing The Mood of the Mountain series. Meanwhile, Lee met Beopjeong, who was a novelist and monk known for the Musoyu (Non-Possession) spirit, and it marked a turning point in Lee’s career. Meeting Beopjeong became a motivation for Lee to create The Moon Jar series. This represents the Musoyu spirit, which means 'emptiness makes filling possible', by emphasising the contrast between the background filled with Obangsaek (the five Korean traditional colours) dots and the subject Lee simplified. Through The Moon Jar series, Lee was immersed in Musoyu, and ended up eliminating the subject which was the only figurative element, reaching complete abstractness. At this time, Lee asked himself the question about his origin once again, staring at the canvas full of Obangsaek dots. The Light+Grain series, which describes the moonlit sea of his hometown, is the answer to this question. Finding the origin in his hometown, Lee Choun Hwan has explored the Korean beauty and the nature, working with his abstract painting, the Light+Grain series, which portraits a sense of the beauty of nature. Even though Lee has covered several materials, it is noteworthy that his series are all linked to each other. Since the exhibition shows all the series of the artist, it provides an opportunity to feel the interactions between works, and Lee’s life-long endeavours to find his root and to broaden the artistic world. 월 장소 Saatchi Gallery, Duke of York´s HQ, King´s Road, Chelsea, London, SW3 4RY, United Kingdom (Gallery 4)Photos by Lucy Emms모든 이미지는 무단 도용 및 재배포·복제를 금지합니다.
